Funny... I've been thinking about this. For a long time, I sought a way to do EMDR "safely". It finally hit me recently that many things can be done cautiously and safely... but we would be wise to not try to do them at all. I liken it to driving on black ice. Yep, you can do it. Why would you? There are many techniques besides EMDR to treat trauma and other problems. (Although EMDR does tend to be more validated, research wise.) EMDR can be miraculous... I have had very positve AND very negative experiences with it. However, I think some therapists treat the client ability's to do EMDR as a "standard" of ego strength or therapeutic progress. That's a bit silly. EMDR speeds things along. That's great when it's sunny and the road is straight. Otherwise, maybe it's best to take another route.
