I have a thought, based on symptoms this client describes. The "pain" increases as I begin to process events, dynamics and needs. It helps to remind myself that the overwhelm is maybe not because the sadness itself is overwhelming and dangerous but because any "feeling" is overwhelming and dangerous. Unbeknownst to me, I spent most of my life having "shadows" of feelings... experiencing feelings as, let's say, one of Plato's "forms" <grin> was unnerving... whether the feeling was positive or negative. My point is that it is sometimes grounding and helpful to attempt to discern whether it is the feeling (sadness, rage, grief, joy = nouns) which is disturbing or the feeling itself (verb) which is so dissonant and unnerving. Thanks for listening.
