Usually, when EMDR is combined with imagery or suggestion as in the work of Twombly, Berkowitz and Fine, and myself for dissociation, or Leeds, Korn, for resource development or ego strengthening, the sets are short and slow. I tend to think the brain waves are different but I know of no research on this point. When its fast it is more likely to be associative in my clinical opinion. When it is slow it is more amenable to building imagery or creating distance or, you could say, making dissocation work for you in the short term.
