I don't know of any reseaarch directly investing EMDR
and REM in the same study. However, many of us puzzle about the role of REM in everyday "emotional hygiene" as I like to call it.

To me, it seems that REM sleep provides a household strength processing to deal with the synthesis and consolidation of everyday life. In traumatic experience, the household strength processor isn't enough, and the REM processing breaks down before it can successfully complete, resulting in nightmares or other disturbing symptoms. EMDR provides an industrial strength processor that enables the material to get processed to its adaptive conclusion.
