I didn't see you post here til now. I'd ask each prospective EMDR therapist what they do to ensure that proceeding with EMDR is safe. They should say that they make sure you have a "safe place," meaning, in the mind's eye, where you can go to quiet yourself, or other skills for self-soothing. They should say they look to see if there are red flags indicating the person isn't stable enough to proceed with EMDR (these include things like suicidality, roof over their head, current substance abuse, and more). They should also say these screen everybody to see if they are highly dissociative or not and if so, proceed with containment and stabilization, with EMDR to come later if ever. For those, an appropriate dissociation procotol for EMDR should be used. They should assess whether the client has sufficient positive internal resources and ego strength to proceed, and if not, work on strengthening those resources prior to doing EMDR. Finally, they should see if the client feels ready, after reading about EMDR or viewing a video, to proceed, and if they have questions or concerns.
