emdr and long term ptsd

my companion is a 51 yr old male, whose first 40 yrs of life were marked by violence and the concomitant trauma. he has been treated for depression for several years now with no amelioration of problems.

the only treatment for long term ptsd that is available in our area is emdr and i am wondering if it has been effective in dealing with such cases?
