I had ECT (8 in all) about 6 years ago. I did not find it to be very helpful at all. I guess the first question I would ask you was did YOU find the past ECT to be of any real help to you? I also had EMDR both before (about 11 mths prior) and then again after (about 2 years after) I did experiance some differences in the EMDR BUT I think the differences were more related t the styles and situations of the therapist involved and my relationship to each of them. The first therapist (who is also an EMDR Facilitator in my area) treated me on an inpatient unit, and thus we had more time and the security to push the limits so to speak. These sessions were very powerful. The last set of EMDR sessions were on an outpatient basis, with a Liscensed EMDR therapist who only used EMDR on a limited basis, and the issue of safety was high, so these sessions tended to go a bit slower. All in all I cannot say that the differiances I experianced were connected to the ECT. HOWEVER I agree that maybe trying one FIRST, instead of combinding the two would be more suitable at this time. (By The Way) My Second EMDR therapist was on staff at the hospital where I had the ECT and while he came to visit me there we did not attempt to do EMDR at that time. I would think that the interferance with the short term memory would make any progress gained in the EMDR session, mute. Whatever you descide... I send you my best.
