Well, if you are referring to a standard issue religious cult, that kind of programming is in the realm of a belief system, social conditioning, and can be addressed with a combination of EMDR and cognitive restructuring (no research on this point, only clinical experience).

If you are referring to sadistic ritual abuse and the programming that occurs through mind control/conditioning methods based on states of deprivation, torture, hypnosis, drugs, etc, and then various beliefs and conditioned responses shaped, that's a very specialized set of skills. No research but clinical experience tells us that EMDR has a place in a comprehensive and informed treatment approach to desensitize that traumatic conditioning, along with education and more.
