Why is EMDR training cloaked in secrecy? CBT and every other valid therapy is not only available in step-by-step manuals anyone can buy, it's being taught at the high school level. I don't buy that EMDR is more "difficult" to administer than other treatment due to the wide variety of users (BA and under). If it was made free to the public, I would see if it was appropriate and valid and if so, I'd use it in my practice when needed. The pay to practice and learn EMDR just makes it harder to accept it.
If it is useful, please advertise it. Send out videos and manuals to therapists and the like so we can use this miracle cure. I realize that EMDR is now being taught at some colleges and that is great. The whole "pay to play" thing is just too junk science at this point for EMDR (touch-field therapy, healing touch etc ad nauseum) to be taken seriously.
Lastly, PTSD ranks up there in terms of "severity" of illness. For EMDR to be the first line of treatment for some therapists for this very serious disorder, it raises some concern. If EMDR was used for only middling problems like test anxiety or arcane phobias, then EMDR away. PTSD is associated with not only changes in brain function, but structure as well, so please, if you EMDR, keep in mind that these are real people who pay real money for real symptom abatement, not snake oil and sunday morning TV promises of salvation.
