I'm going to rope in this discussion so that we talk about EMDR, which is the purpose of this forum. The problem with using EMDR with core early splits is that there isn't -- can't be---- ego strength that early because there is no (or not much) ego. That's why resource development methods are beneficial to help strengthen and hold when and if early work is done. Needs to be in context of a safe therapeutic relationship. Just seeing the size of the split, the insolvable dilemna, from an adult perspective while (and I mean simultaneously to) the processing of such early pain can provide a way to rise above the insolvable dilemna. In ego state parlance we have older parts of selves hold and comfort the babies, and provide in the minds eye what was needed back then, and what was unavailable back then. No research to support the approach, but clinical findings are generally positive when this approach is used.
