Bilateral stimulation can be achieved in many ways, through waving fingers or other object across the field of vision or using a moving light on a light bar, through alternate knee presses or "tapping", or through alternating sounds in each ear. My therapist and I tried several things but I found that using both CD and knee presses together were the most effective in the EMDR sessions. I got the information on where to order the bilateral stimulation CD from my therapist after expressing to her the reason I wanted the CD. I only did this because I knew I had her to fall back on if things got out of hand with my using it between sessions. I would never recommend anyone use these CD's without supervision and without the safety net of a therapeutic relationship, and without adequate containment protocols in place either internally or in an agreement with the therapist to schedule extra sessions for ego strengthening if the need arose. And although in my instance this has been a huge help, I did have resource and safe place installation before I began using the CD between sessions, and I think this is the bare minimum that should be attained before using this type of technique alone. And there are things that cannot be accomplished outside of therapy using the CD. If you use the CD alone and loop, there is no one there to help you find the way out. Cognitive weave can not be accomplished by a person who is in the middle of a conflict and trying to process. It has to be done by the therapist. If you are currently doing EMDR work, I would suggest that you broach the topic with your therapist and see if he or she can help you order a copy, and if he or she would be willing to do a trial run and be willing to schedule extra sessions if you need them. Hope this helps. Diane
