One of the nice things about EM's though is that if the client get emotionally flooded you can have them cover their "sad eye" and that sometimes can make things more tolerable - though you may need to go back and repeat some emdr using both eyes, I think. I haven't heard a lot about it but in emdr supervision this came up once and we tried it out. Basically we sat and thought about something sad or disturbing and then covered one eye and see if that made a difference. Usually when a particular eye is covered (for me it was the left eye) the sadness is not so intense. My emdr supervisor said that she actually had a client who said she was so distressed one day at home, due to emotional flooding, that she wore an eye patch for the afternoon and it was enough for her to be able to get through the day feeling relatively stable. I have used this once or twice with clients during emdr and they have said they found it helpful. I have often thought of changing my voicemail to say "if you are in crisis, cover your sad eye" :)
