I was touched by your post and just want you to know that I, too, have a childhood abuse issue I am working with in therapy. And I too am using EMDR as part of my therapy work. I can also identify with the tendency to laugh at inappropriate moments (usually under great stress - probably a way to deny the pain inside). I've worked hard for over 2 years at healing, and I often get discouraged, thinking I am not making enough progress. But others say they see how far I've come. I'll bet the same is true for you. So don't beat yourself up if it seems like it is taking a long time and/or if you start to feel you aren't getting better quickly enough. We've lived with these traumas for years (decades maybe!), and it will take time to work through them and learn different, healthier ways to live, cope, think. When I get discouraged, I remind myself "It's going to take as long as it's going to take." So be gentle with yourself as you stay the course.
