The following is not necessarily applicable in your case, and you should talk to your therapist about your EMDR processing. In general, when highly dissociative people receive EMDR, the therapist may use "fractionated abreactions", as described by Dr Catherine Fine, and Dr. Richard Kluft, in conducting the EMDRs. In that approach, one or more part(s) of the self contain the pain, and those parts do the EMDR, rather than the host, initially. That way, the host is free to go on and "do life", while the parts take care of the trauma business that must be dealt with. (This is true with or without EMDR, as some people use hypnotic procedures for conducting abreactions). When this approach is used, no doubt the host doesn't remember the EMDR session, since they were "gone". After the traumatic memories have been detoxified, the host can then do their processing of the material. Be sure to speak to your therapist about this to see if this is what is being done in your case. Sandra Paulsen Inobe, PhD
