In therapy, is it normal to become aware of separate parts of yourself that seem completely distinct, even though intellectually you know they are all part of YOU? For example, a patient knows they have several parts of the self (adult, child, etc.), and they are aware when one part becomes active. But when the child part acts out, it is like the adult is standing at a distance. They can see what is happening but can't do anything about it. And sometimes the adult hears what the therapist says, but the child doesn't believe it or hear it. Does this mean the person could have DID or MPD?
