Neil Jacobson, Andrew Christiansen, and colleagues have developed an integrative approach to marital therapy which combines the change-oriented strategies which are traditionally used in behavioral marital therapy with a focus on acceptance within the relationship. In a trial testing the effectiveness of their integrative approach as compared with traditional behavioral marital therapy, 21 couples received one of the two approaches for up to 26 sessions. At termination, 80% of the couples who received the integrative approach were either improved or no longer distressed. 64% of the couples who received traditional behavioral marital therapy were either improved or no longer distressed.
