I had always thought that cognitive therapy was based on the stoic philosophy of the 1 AD philosopher, Epictetus. On John Bush's website, I found and sent for a great little book called "A Manual for Living" a new interpetation by Sharon Lebell. It's pithy phrases capture the essense of CBT. Epictetus is the author of the phase "Events don't hurt us, but our views of them can." Epictetus says "We cannot choose our external circumstances, but we can always choose how we respond to them." The first pragraph goes as follows: Happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one principle: some things are within our control and some things are not. It is only after you have faced up to this fundamental rule and learned to distinguish between what you can and can't control that inner tranquility and outer effectiveness becomes possible."
