A Cognitive Therapist focuses on HOW the client thinks. They look for patterns of distortions, or categories (i.e all-or-nothing thinking). Cognitive therapists are process oriented. A client states that her husband doesn't love her anymore, because for the last several days he's been quiet and withdrawn. A Cognitive therapist will say she is using a faulty TYPE of thinking, in this case, arbitrary inference (assumption without evidence). An RET therapist will say she has a dysfunctional thought, in this case, that she must have everyone's love and approval to be happy. Hope that helps at least a little bit.
A Rational Emotive Therapist focuses on WHAT the client is thinking. They are content oriented, and more interpretive.
As an example...
Sincerely,
Sean M. Benedict, MFT
