CBT Therapists More Effective than Generalists in Treating Anxiety in MBHO Setting
Jim Pretzer · 1/4/00 at 11:26 am ET

165 adults with anxiety disorders, including phobias and panic attacks, sought treatment through the Synton Group, a managed behavioral health association in Lansing, Michigan. 86 were treated by therapists with specialized training in CBT and the remainder were treated by generalists.

The duration of treatment with CBT therapists averaged 6 sessions while treatment with generalists averaged eight sessions. Therapist ratings of patients' anxiety levels at the close of treatment were lower for CBT therapists and, in the two years following treatment, 19% of CBT patients returned for further treatment while 39% of generalists' patients returned for further treatment.
