Quite a bit of research has been done on using CT and CBT with the elderly. Overall, it shows that CT and CBT work quite well with the elderly. One good starting place is the Winter, 1997 volume of Behavior Therapy. It includes a series of articles on Behavior Therapy and CBT with the elderly. The articles cover topics such as depression, suicidality, serious mental illness, sexual dysfunction, and anxiety disorders. Also, the Comprehensive Casebook of Cognitive Therapy (Freeman & Dattilio, 1992, Plenum Press) includes a case example of CT with The Older Adult (Chapter 19) and a case example of the treatment of Inhibited Grief in an older adult (Chapter 20). If you haven't spotted them already, there are two posts about CT with the elderly earlier in this forum. CBT vs Meds vs Combination for Late Life Insomnia and CT in the treatment of depression in elderly primary care patients. You should be able to click on the titles of those posts to jump directly to them. Finally, if you check my list of Recommended Readings you will find a section with additional recommended readings on CT with Older Adults.
