Richard- your beliefs may be a bit rigid and may contribute to difficulty connecting with some patients. Though it makes sense, conceptually, that we are responsible for our reaction to situations, including our emotional reaction, it is also true that there are certain situations that universally trigger difficult emotion. Emotion related to loss and trauma, for instance, are universal and are adaptive when handled healthfully. The bone of contention may be the frequency, duration, and intensity, of these emotions along with the beliefs and behavior that serve to maintain them. Just a thought.
