An article in the October, 2003 edition of Advances in Cognitive Therapy (the Academy of Cognitive Therapy's newsletter) reports the results of an unpublished clinical trial of CT for Avoidant Personality Disorder (AvPD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD). 22 patients who met DSM criteria for AvPD and 16 who met criteria for OCPD recieved treatment at the Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania. Dropout rates were higher than average, 64% of AvPD and 56% of OCPD subjects completed treatment, but results were good for Ss who completed a full course of treatment. Only one of the AvPD subjects still met DSM criteria for AvPD in blind ratings on the SCID at termination and none of the OCPD subjects met criteria. These results are very encouraging but also emphasize the importance of preventing premature termination of treatment when treating clients who have personality disorders.
