I agree with Jim's comments and would add another possibility. Jeff Young, in his schema-focused cognitive therapy, discusses how some people may not connect with our didactic approach due to what he calls schema avoidance, schema maintainence and schema compensatory processes. Rather than expereince the full emotional, cognitive, imagery, memories provoked by the schema they
avoid it. By using role play, imagery work and the relationship it is possible to trigger the schema (or some level of it). Once this is done more usual CBT procedures can be utilized.
