How does one explain to children of different ages and levels of cognitive development the rationale of exposure and response prevention, which seems to be one of the main therapy-ingredients in the treatment of OCD.
To children, it seems self-understood that performing rituals is a good thing if it helps them feel more relaxed and less tense. How to explain and motivate them to give this up. How to explain and get their approval or cooperation for their parents stopping reassuring the child when he is very tense and anxious and when he demands his parent's calming reassurance.
If anyone reading this has some experience with OCD treatment of children I would appreciate hearing about your experience. I am familiar with an excellent book by John March, but the issue of explaining the rationale of exposure and especially response prevention still eludes me.
Thanks.
