We are piloting some manualized treatment programs in the Wisconsin prison system. We have already our cognitive skills/resturucturing program which is scripted. We have a 3 day training and are trying to develop monitoring protecols. We are also adapting a cognitive program for sex offenders by David Thornton which is being used throughout the United Kingdom. Dr. Thornton monitors his programs by videotaping all sessions and reviewing them. In a system like corrections, it seems important to try to standardize some programming. We used to have such a wide range of programs which came and went with the therapist. I think there are ways to standardize and manualize but still leave room for individual therapist to adapt according to the needs of the client/group. As you note, monitoring and training are the most important part of any program, I would agree.
