"touched by an immortal" - interesting - but we would need to know more - how & where & why did the immortal come to her - in a dream? Did she meet the immortal at a religious gathering or in other circumstances? A cursory survey of many traditions will reveal how important hair, or a lock of hair is. In hindu cultures -see [ 'Religion against the self' by Isabelle Nabakov ] - a lock of hair is taken from the entranced subject during a ritual performance & is nailed to a tamarind tree because that is where demons dwell. Of course 'the immortal' may have been an alien from outer space, or a saint - christian, muslim, hindu, daoist, buddhist or some other great soul & the 'touch' may have great personal significance. Having a family & friends misunderstanding the issues & insisting that she 'stop doing that' may well be a large part of the problem.
