Generalizing Behaviors

I am teaching a social/emotional curriculum and the students can practice and tell me verbatim what I want to hear. But when the students are faced with the situation outside of the classroom- they do not generalize what has been taught. Are there any strategies for generalizing behaviors outside of the classroom? Thanks
