this client sound a lot like me, some minor differences. Is the client making any progress? Were their goals set at the beginning? Does the client feel she is not making progress or is it just the therapist? What does the client see as blocking her? My understanding is that recovery from PTSD can take 3 to 5 years if it is complex enough. It sounds to me that some of the PTSD reactions need to be dealt with. I found that to be quite helpful. Learning to pay attention to my body, being able to sit with the feelings and sensations for longer periods of time without shutting down or becoming anxious. Then, I had to learn to correctly identify some of this. It has been a long slow process and I still have some difficulties. If you don't have experience with PTSD and abuse, then, maybe referring on may be the case. However, it might just be that it will take more time. Also, I have found the EMDR has helped me out along with some ego state work. Maybe the client would benefit from those and if you don't have the training it would be useful to recommend the referral for the benefit of those approaches. I know that if I had to change therapists now I wouldn't do it. Is it possible to refer her to someone for specific areas/skills and you yourself be the primary therapist? Just my view as a client who sounds a lot like the one you have mentioned.
