Around the time teens "turn" into this gothic fad is around the time everyone is sorting into their little groups searching for their niche in the school's social environment. Some become jocks, some cheerleaders, some skaters, and then some gothic. You can't really pinpoint a cause of the whole transition because frankly there are so many possible reasons for so many things. Possible reasons: The above reason is a good general reason. You have a group at school, schools are often large and you have a little "click" that you sit around with whether during lunch or before and after school. Attention seeking. Black clothes, black hair, black makeup grabs a little more attention than the normal old school girl look(the regular clothes). Some of the attention attained from dressing this way is negative which can provoke violence or simply make them go more extreme with their attire. Two general reasons. One of the things I have noticed from my gothic type friends is that no one of them wishes to be like the rest. They want to be unique and mysterious. They often put up a social barrier to others unlike them, feeling that they will be like the last that just yelled some sort of verbal abuse at them. This is just a mixture of thoughts in no way organized, but I feel its an accurate answer.
