Interesting!!! Are we trying to shorten the time or to fill the time because we are bored or not able to just wait and relax. It is a need to be doing something. The use of the word "always" stood out for me. I'm not sure that we are "always" ...... Perhaps you can rephrase this. Is it the technology that causes people to rush from one place to another? What comes first the chicken or the egg. I think you are asking a number of different questions and I would limit the questions. One area is technology, its'purpose and impact. Another area is human behaviour/psychology in regards to waiting. What we do when we are waiting for the train may have nothing to do with technology as such. Just my humble response!
As for designing machines that shorten connection times - it isn't the general population that does that, it isn't the consumers. The consumers get sold these ideas. So, it is probably curious, scientific interest plus the financial rewards for business etc.
