Boy, do I want to talk to you about geriatric counseling. I am a student counselor, and as one of my courses, I am putting together a course on counseling the elderly. I have alot of resources put together already, but would love to hear about what you know, in terms of counseling needs of the elderly. I couldn't agree with you more about the family also being the patient. Systems theory, eh? I am also considering specializing in this area, as I need to get into an area where there aren't already a lot of people (sort of getting in on the ground floor). What kinds of agencies or facilities make themselves available to counseling the elderly? I used to work in a nursing home as a recreation therapist, and I hesitate to go back to that setting because I could end up being a glorified rec therapist.
