Many art therapy education programs are now giving degrees in counseling with an emphasis in art therapy. I am thinking of Caldwell College in NJ, which has just started this year with a degree doing just that. Others offer art therapy degrees that allow graduates to apply for licensure at the state level. But as a for a formal theory integrating art therapy and counseling-- to my knowledge there has not been a formal integration. Some art therapy programs teach counseling principles and then have students engage in art therapy experientials to demonstrate theory, but this is not really a truly integrative approach. I teach courses in crisis intervention and trauma debriefing to counselors regularly-- counselors have a great deal of interest in learning skills in art therapy, not only in this area (trauma), but in their work with various populations, particularly children. I don't think I answered your question very well! But perhaps this gives you a brief idea of the possible interfaces between art therapy and the counseling profession. best wishes,
Cathy
