The psychological study of displaced individuals tells us that the consequences of relocation are significant. One way individuals usually cope with the anxiety produced by a strange, new environment is by personalizing it. I am sure you can think of numerous ways for your students to personalize their new space with art making.
Institutional spaces are usually dehumanizing. How does the new school compare to the old one in that respect? Maybe administration would let you place a few plants, or listen to your suggestions, or your students, about redecorating. It can start with reanranging the furniture, and maybe organize an exhibit of student art. As the secretary who decorates her cubicle with family snapshots knows, small changes in the right direction can make a big difference.
