On Thursday, June 3 2004, Dr. Azadeh Azad won her Small Claims Court case against the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute (VATI). Dr. Azad claimed that the VATI director, Lois Woolf, dismissed her without just cause. On her behalf, Dr. Azad had documentary evidence demonstrating her unjust dismissal as well as letters from two former VATI trainees who characterized Lois Woolf as a liar. I also was a witness, describing my experience at VATI and with Lois Woolf. Ms. Woolf declined to cross-examine me. She had no witnesses of her own. The judge ruled that Ms. Woolf did indeed dismiss Dr. Azad without just cause and must repay all tuition plus educational expenses such as textbooks and a library card. For those interested in the ignored problem of client and student abuse by art therapists, I suggest Dr. Azad's website: I urge all readers who have experienced abuse by an art therapist to come forward. I also suggest that anyone considering a career in art therapy avoid VATI.
