Two courses in art therapy will be offered by our distinguished visiting faculty. The program will be held in the Palazzo La Marmora in the historic part of the town of Biella, located in the heart of northern Italy's Piemonte region. July 19 - 23, 2000. Medical art therapy with adults: creative approaches to integrative healthcare. Cathy A. Malchiodi, MA, ATR, LPAT, LPCC, REAT.
This course provides an overview of how medical art therapy complements the medical treatment of adults with physical or life-threatening illness. Topics to be covered include: how art making, imagery and the creative process can be used to reduce stress, manage symptoms and enhance recovery; an integral approach to healthcare through art as intervention; how art therapy is a "mind-body" therapy: medical art therapy approaches to trauma and loss; and how the contemporary fields of health psychology, complementary and integrative medicine, and arts medicine impact the practice of medical art therapy. The course will be supplemented by experiential activities, case material and videos to illustrate concepts and techniques.
