I think the issue of pay is an important one. I see myself as a pioneer in a new field . It is up to each of us to improve the pay and conditions in our field I was lucky as wellas assertive to be able to start a completely new art therapy program at the Alternative Behavior Treatment Centers in Mundelein, IL. They have been very supportive and my salary is very good compared to most who had just left school at the same time. It is difficult to communicate to people that we are therapists who use art as the primary modality to help our client's function psychologically. There is a lot of ignorance about out field and we need to be the educators. Slowly but surely we will be accepted as similar to our other colleagues such as Psychologist and social workers. Professional counselors have been waging the same kind of battle for decades and helped to pass the new legislation allowing LCPCs to charge insurance companies in IL. Now that we can see long term commitment of others can improve our lot we also need to step up to the plate. HODA
