Here in the U.S., most placements for art therapists-in-training are unpaid. A few interns get hired before they graduate, but most find it takes away from their learning experience.
As a student-volunteer, you can require that certain conditions be met in return for your work (your schedule, quality clinical supervision, a minimum of patient-contact hours to name a few).
As a paid employee, you loose most of that leverage, and you do the duties that are assigned to you.
Education is expensive in the U.S., so students would rather volunteer in an institution in exchange for a rich educational experience that fits their needs as well as the needs of the patients. Do you really want to sacrifice part of your educational experience for money you could make some other way?
