Thank you for your provocative question: How are ambiguity and uncertainty at the heart of the art therapy process?
The first thought it brings to me is that ambiguity is inherent to symbolism, since something is symbolic when it can be seen as one thing and as another.
For literature on uncertainty in the art therapy process, I would recommend Pat Allen's Art is a way of knowing (Shambhala). Of course, much of the literature about art therapy or the creative process in general deals with the unpredictability of it all, the exploration, and the discovery. I also think we are more likely to be open to learning something from the art if it teaches us something we haven't thought of. The content of artwork changes with time and with our deepening ability to witness it.
