You know you art therapists really tick me off. I am also a social worker and am insulted by the reponse to the initial question. I am trained to deal with children and the trauma that they have experienced - of course I would be able to deal with "intense emotion" of abused children!! Why don't you answer the person's question rather than questioning the validity of her ability ?!! I have noticed that people who post on this site are quick to condemn but do not help! To anwer the initial question, a great basic resource is Cathy Malchiodi's book "Understanding Children's Drawings." Another new book is "Therapeutic Art Directives and Resources: Activities and Initiatives for Individuals and Groups" by Susan Makin. It is a new book that can be hard to find; I was able to order it at Barnes and Noble on-line. Art therapists - please get off your high horse and try to be a positive influence to other professions, rather than a condescending one!
