art therapy and developmentally disabled

I work with developmentally disabled adults who have a diagnosis of autism and mental retardation. in addition the gentleman I want to work with can be extremely aggressive an highly self injurious, to the point of destroying parts of his body. any help on where or how I should begin with him would be helpful. He has an interest in art and enjoys it. thanks.
