Dear Sister Marie Cecilia,
I am a mental health counselor (B.A in psychology and studio art) working in an adult residential facility for those who have a mental illness and who have drug and alcohol addiction. I am interested in pursuing an art therapy masters program. I have run some art groups in this facility in a process oriented way. And I now have a track record of groups that have failed miserably and then some wonderfully successful groups. I definitely see and feel that there is a need for art in the lives of those who are dually diagnosed. However, from looking in the Classified ads and with the managed care situation, it looks like Art therapists need to patchwork together careers. I would look into organizations such as hospice, drug and alcohol treatment centers, older adult assisted living facilities, woman's crisis support. I don't think any of these jobs would be entitled "Art Therapist" necessarily, but surely you could bring art therapy into the job environment that you have. I would love to hear back from you or anyone else interested. I live in Santa Cruz,CA, and am also very interested in becoming involved/helping in anyone's art research or programs. My email is: ceciliesc@hotmail.com. Cecilie
