Frequently Asked Questions (in no particular order)
1. What is the best school for art therapy / where can I get training in art therapy?
My personal opinion is that the best school is the one in the city you wish to work in that is acreditied by your regional professional association. This is because the contacts made through training, and more importantly, practicum placements are invaluable in finding that all-important first job after graduation. I you are already employed as a therapist and just want the training, then this is less of a consideration, and you should interview school directors to find one with a therapeutic philosophy and other qualities you fit with. If, like me, you live in Canada, you can get a list of schools at the art therapy in Canada homepage http:/www.ican.net/~phansen or come to the BC Art Therapy Association site at http://www.arttherapy.bc.ca
If you live in the US the American Art Therapy Association has a list of acredited schools at http://www.arttherapy.org In Australia, the association is at P.O. Box 303, GLEBE, NSW 2037, Australia. I know there are associations in England and Germany as well, but I don't have the adresses. There have been posts with contact information for people working in art therapy and therapeutic art in other countries as well, including Brasil, on this forum. Look for them if you need those contacts.
2. I am doing a school project on art therapy, please send me some information.
I suggest you go to the sites of one of the professional associations listed above and look at their information. Even better, however, is the comprehensive bibliographical and other information at the Art Therapy in Canada site maintained by Art Therapist and webspinner Petrea Hansen at http://www.ican.net/~phansen
3. I am considering Art Therapy as a career and I am undergoing undergraduate studies (or am an artist) what courses do I need to take?
That all depends on the school you choose to go to, you should contact them directly (see #1, above, for how)
4. Can you provide me with internship information or contacts in... ?
No. I suggest you contact a school that trains in the region you are interested in, they may be able to help you, although their primary interest will be to find placements for their own students.
