Hi Cathy,
If you are looking for introductory "what is art therapy anyways" information, see if you can track down any of Harriet Wadeson's books, they're well written and provide the kind of background info you need. As well on the net there is the Art Therapy in Canada Homepage, which has an extensive bibliography and other information. Its at http://www.io.org/~phansen/index.html . For more academic/research specialty information on art therapy the Journals "the Arts in Psychotherapy" and "Art Therapy" may be available in some university libraries. Also, read some of my introductory messages on this forum and my response to a therapist asking about the difference between a therapist that uses art and a professional art therapist (" A rose by any other name...) Good luck. The short answer to your question is as well: Art is psychotherapy, Art is another way of commmunicating with the therapist and with oneself.
Good luck with your research,
Sophia Kelly
