Regarding the question about self-portraits, do you mean drawings or photo self-portraits?
If photo, then it may help to check out PhotoTherapy -- do a "search" for the word "PhotoTherapy" on this page and also the page for the Newsgroup on the "Art Therapy in Canada" website, and read all the info and/or contact me directly.
However, "research" is difficult in our field, unless it's heuristic or phenomenological based, as there are no absolute truths per se -- which usually makes researchers frustrated. My PhotoTherapy book gives some suggestions, but it is more practice focused than research focused.
