Dr. Shapiro, I would like to suggest reading two books by Dr.John Sarno, I am a 32 year old male with Fibromyalgia. I was also sexually abused as a child. I believe that between Dr. Sarno's theories and the EMDR theories we are starting to have a better grasp on these soft tissue maladies. I know there is no doubt in my mind that Fibromyalgia is a condition where painful somatic memories are trapped in the body. It is a benign, and I believe it is a distortion of one's true self as depression and anxielty are as well. There is too much body of evidence to believe otherwise. In fact, I am in agreement with Dr. Sarno that the basis for back pain is very rarely ever structually based unless a fracture is invovled. As he says "The Back is very strong and resilient - and we don't realize how strong we really are". I hope the two theories will prove to be positive to chronic pain patients in the future.
The first is "Healing Back Pain-The Mind Body Connection", the second "The Mind Body Prescription-Healing the Mind, Healing the Pain".
