A 78 year old Holocaust survivor has been referred to me for chronic depression, whose primary cause was extreme trauma and loss of family from his war experiences. His daughter had heard that I had successfully treated a friend of hers with EMDR, and sent her father to me for treatment. Is advanced age considered to be a contraindication for use of EMDR? The patient is relatively healthy for his age, but has a history of cardiac and pulmonary problems. Otherwise he is alert, and open to treatment. His almost obsessive memories of traumatic events are painfully clear and excellent targets for EMDR, however I fear that his age and medical history would make him a questionable risk.
Thanks for any input.
