Common sense cautions regarding memory work
    Shapiro · 6/3/98 at 1:43 PM ET

EMDR does not cause delusions. However, as with any method of psychotherapy, the client must be appropriately assessed for ego-strength, resources, environmental stability, etc. Readiness for, and suitability for any method that directly addresses traumatic memories is mandatory. Decompensation and emerging dissociative processes with any method is an indication that the proper groundwork has not been set with the client. Clinicians should make sure they are prepared to work with severely disturbed clients before proceeding with any method.
