There may be a formal assessment procedure that I am unaware of, but an informal assesssment can be conducted by asking a person what they do well, what they like about themselves, what makes them feel confident and competent. "Think back to a time in your life when you felt..." makes it specific. If you hear alot of "never", "I don't" and "it's hopeless", "I hate myself" they don't have a lot of internal strength around their self. I think additionally, though, there are some people who have self loathing but still are very strong internally, and hardy. So to informally assess for hardiness, one can ask how they typically cope with things during tough times, and in detailed interviewing, get a sense of whether they feel they can rely on themselves. The outcome of this assessment will point to how much resource installation may be necessary before EMDR proper can begin.
