Maxfield & Hyer have an article in press (sorry, no citation handy) which does document that EMDR studies in which fidelity to the protocol is highest - in other words, the therapists were doing what they were trained to do - had the best results. And that those with lower fidelity had worse results. I believe they found the same general trend with cognitive-behavioral therapy. The better it's performed, the better the results.
