I agree with Wolf also.
I have made several tentative friendships through the internet. Chatting reminds me in many ways of my girlhood days when I use to have pen-pals. We wrote letters back and forth, exchanging information and occasional pictures. Many people have formed friendships in that way. The internet now allows people to take the pen-pal relationship to a new level. Chat, ICQ, email and other electronic means allows us more immediate responses. Friendships that may have taken months to develop in the snail-mail era now happen at a much quicker pace.
As for the comments about online ettiquette, I remember well my days as a newbie. The regulars were kind in teaching me the terms, acronyms and rules of chatting. I am now considered a regular and do my best to help other newbies learn the ropes. Like any social scenario, there are always certain rules, written and unwritten, that need to be followed. People who do well in such social interactions are those who learn those rules. This holds true for the internet as well as for IRL (In Real Life).
